Rest, Reset, and Real Estate: My Journey Back and a Lesson in Self-Preservation

Hey everyone, it’s Sonali, and I’m back! If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been these past few months, well, I’m about to get real with you in a way that might surprise some of you. But transparency has always been my thing, and I believe in keeping it 100 with my community.

I’ve been MIA from social media, and it wasn’t because I was on some fabulous vacation or crushing it behind the scenes. I was taking care of something far more important, my mental and physical health, my peace, and what truly matters most to me: my family.

The Beautiful Chaos of Football Season

If you know me, you know that from August 1st through mid-December every year, my husband and I become professional road warriors. We’re traveling every single weekend, sometimes driving, sometimes flying, to wherever our son might be playing college football. And let me tell you, being on the road for 23 weekends straight, living out of suitcases, sleeping in different beds, and constantly being “on the go” is absolutely exhausting.

But here’s the thing: I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything in the world. Watching my son pursue his dreams, supporting my husband who’s also deeply involved in football coaching, being present for every game, every victory, every challenge, that’s what life is really about. Those moments with my family, the downtime with my grandchildren, slowing my mind down enough to actually be present instead of constantly thinking about work, securing the next deal, or worrying about whether my clients feel I’m there for them every second of every day.

I had to put some things in serious perspective.

When the Smile Becomes a Mask

Let me be completely honest with you: I was smiling, but I was struggling. I was showing up, but I was burned out. I felt numb, overwhelmed, and sad, even though on the outside, everything looked like it was going perfectly. I was carrying the weight of trying to be everything to everyone, the perfect realtor, the supportive wife, the proud mom, the doting grandmother, the always-available business owner.

I was afraid to take a break from work. Terrified, actually. What if my clients thought I didn’t care? What if opportunities passed me by? What if stepping away meant losing everything I’d worked so hard to build?

But then I remembered something I’ve always taught others: self-preservation is the law of the land. If you’re not okay, you can’t help anybody else.

The Biblical Truth About Rest

As a Bible-believing Christian who loves Jesus, I kept coming back to this truth: God gives rest to those He loves. And in these past few months of intentional rest, He has proven that to me in ways I never expected.

I think about Elijah in 1 Kings 19. Here was this powerful prophet who had just experienced an incredible victory, but found himself running, exhausted, overwhelmed, and even depressed. He literally asked God to take his life because he was so burned out. And what did God do? He didn’t rebuke Elijah for being tired. He didn’t tell him to push through or hustle harder.

God let him sleep. God fed him. God gave him rest. Only after Elijah was restored did God give him his next assignment.

That story hit me differently this time around. Sometimes we think taking a break means we’re weak or unfaithful, but maybe, just maybe, God is calling us to pause so He can propel us forward in the way He intended.

What Real Rest Taught Me

During these months of stepping back, incredible things happened. I lost weight. My mind became clearer than it’s been in years. The chronic depression that had been my constant companion? Prayerfully, it’s becoming a thing of the past. I feel reset, renewed, and ready to step into the next phase of my life and show up in the way God intended me to.

This wasn’t about anything being “wrong” with me or me “crashing out.” This was about recognizing that as women, especially as entrepreneurs, mothers, wives, and grandmothers, we have this tendency to take the whole world on our shoulders. We think we have to be everything to everyone, all the time.

But here’s what I learned: taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, it’s necessary. Mental healthcare isn’t weakness, it’s wisdom. Setting boundaries isn’t letting people down, it’s setting yourself up to serve them better.

How This Impacts My Real Estate Practice

Now, you might be wondering, “Sonali, this is all beautiful and personal, but how does this connect to real estate?” I’m so glad you asked!

This season of rest has given me incredible clarity about what I want to do and how I want to serve my clients. I’m setting boundaries that actually help me show up better for the families who trust me with their biggest investment. I’m no longer operating from a place of fear or scarcity, constantly worried about the next deal or trying to be available 24/7.

Instead, I’m operating from a place of peace, purpose, and renewed passion. When I’m working with buyers, sellers, and families relocating to Hampton Roads, I’m fully present. I’m not distracted by burnout or overwhelm. I can give them my best because I’ve taken care of myself first.

Sometimes you have to take a step back in order for God to propel you forward. And that’s exactly what happened to me.

What This Means for You

If you’re reading this and feeling seen, if you’re smiling but struggling, showing up but burning out, please hear me: you are not alone, and you don’t have to carry it all.

Maybe you’re a military family feeling overwhelmed about your next PCS move. Maybe you’re a first-time buyer stressed about making the “perfect” decision. Maybe you’re selling your family home and feeling emotional about letting go. Maybe you’re an entrepreneur, a parent, a caregiver who’s forgotten what rest even feels like.

Here’s what I want you to know: it’s okay to pause. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to prioritize your peace over other people’s expectations. And when it comes to buying or selling a home: one of the most stressful experiences in life: you deserve to work with someone who understands the importance of taking care of the whole person, not just closing the deal.
