A Quiet Christmas: Gratitude, Rest, and God's Faithfulness
As I sit here in the peaceful aftermath of Christmas Day, my house still adorned with twinkling lights and the gentle hum of family conversations echoing in the background, I can’t help but reflect on what this season has meant to our family this year.
This Christmas was different. Not because we didn’t have joy or celebration, but because we chose something that felt more precious than any elaborate festivities: quiet time together at home.
When Life Teaches You What Really Matters
If I’m being completely honest with you, 2025 has been one of the most challenging years our family has faced. We’ve experienced losses that shook us to our core: the kind that make you question everything and hold your loved ones just a little tighter. There were moments when I wondered how we’d make it through, when the weight of grief felt almost unbearable.
But here’s what I’ve learned through it all: God’s faithfulness doesn’t depend on our circumstances. Even in our darkest moments, even when we couldn’t see the way forward, He was there. He held us when we couldn’t hold ourselves together. He provided strength when we had none left to give.

This Christmas, as I watched my youngest son P3 (who’s grown into such an incredible young man and D1 athlete at Marshall University) laughing with his siblings, I was reminded of Psalm 30:5: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” We’ve had our nights of weeping this year, but the joy that comes from God’s presence in our lives has sustained us through every season.
The Gift of a Quiet Christmas
At this stage of my life, Christmas looks so different than it used to. Gone are the days of rushing from store to store, trying to find the perfect gifts or orchestrating elaborate holiday productions. Don’t get me wrong: there’s beauty in all of that, and I have such sweet memories of Christmases past filled with excitement and celebration.
But this year, what our hearts needed most was stillness. We needed time to breathe, to be present with each other, and to truly absorb the miracle of what we were celebrating. We spent Christmas Day at home, in our pajamas until noon, sharing stories over a leisurely breakfast, and just… being together.
There’s something profoundly beautiful about slowing down enough to actually experience gratitude rather than just rushing through the motions of the season. When you’re not caught up in the whirlwind of holiday expectations, you can actually hear your own heartbeat, feel the warmth of your family’s presence, and recognize God’s goodness in the simple moments.
Finding God in the Simple Moments
As a realtor, I spend a lot of time helping families find their forever homes: those special places where memories are made and lives are built. But this Christmas reminded me that home isn’t just about the four walls that surround us; it’s about the people we choose to fill those walls with and the love we cultivate within them.
Despite everything we’ve walked through this year, despite the losses and the challenges, we’re still here. We’re still a family. We’re still choosing love and hope and faith.
There’s a verse in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 that says, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I’ll be honest: there were days this year when giving thanks felt impossible. But sitting in my living room on Christmas morning, surrounded by the people I love most, I understood this verse in a deeper way. It’s not that we give thanks for the hard things; it’s that we give thanks in the midst of them, recognizing that God’s goodness exists even in our most difficult seasons.
The True Meaning of Rest
One thing that struck me most about our quiet Christmas was how restorative it felt to simply rest. Not the kind of rest where you collapse from exhaustion, but the intentional rest that comes from choosing to be still and present.
In our culture, especially during the holidays, there’s so much pressure to do more, buy more, be more. But sometimes the most radical thing you can do is choose less. Choose quiet. Choose presence over presents. Choose gratitude over getting.
As a working mom and business owner, I know how hard it can be to give yourself permission to slow down. But this Christmas taught me that rest isn’t lazy: it’s necessary. It’s in the quiet moments that we can actually hear God’s voice, feel His presence, and recognize all the ways He’s been faithful to us.
Gratitude for God’s Faithfulness
Looking back on this year, I can see God’s hand in ways I couldn’t recognize in the moment. He provided comfort through friends who showed up when we needed them most. He gave us strength through scripture that seemed to speak directly to our circumstances. He surrounded us with a community that prayed for us and supported us through every difficult day.

And even in my work with Hutson Realty Group, I’ve seen His faithfulness. He’s brought families into my path who needed exactly what I had to offer, and He’s allowed me to be part of their stories in meaningful ways. Even in a year marked by personal loss, God has continued to use me to help others find home: and that’s a gift I don’t take lightly.
A Message of Hope for You
If you’re reading this and 2025 has been a difficult year for you too, I want you to know that you’re not alone. Whatever losses you’ve experienced, whatever challenges you’re facing, whatever mountains seem impossible to climb: God sees you. He knows your pain, and He’s walking with you through it.
Christmas reminds us that God didn’t stay distant from our struggles. He came down, became human, and experienced everything we experience: including loss, grief, and hardship. Emmanuel means “God with us,” and that promise isn’t just for the good times. It’s for every moment, every season, every tear, and every triumph.
Looking Forward with Hope
As we move toward the new year, I’m carrying the peace of this quiet Christmas with me. I’m choosing to hold onto the lessons this difficult year has taught me about what really matters. Family. Faith. Presence over productivity. Gratitude in all circumstances.
And I’m choosing to believe that God’s faithfulness in 2025 is just a preview of His faithfulness in 2026 and beyond. The same God who carried us through our darkest days is the same God who will guide us into whatever comes next.
