Did You Know? Surprising Facts About the History of Thanksgiving

Hey Hampton Roads families! As we gather around our tables this Thanksgiving, I thought it would be fun to share some absolutely fascinating facts about this beloved holiday that might surprise you. As a Virginia Beach realtor who's had the joy of helping so many families find their forever homes here in our beautiful area, I love discovering the rich history that surrounds us: and Thanksgiving has some incredible stories that go way beyond what we learned in school!

Get ready to impress your dinner guests with these amazing historical tidbits. Some of these facts completely changed how I think about this special day!

Did You Know? The Entire Story Rests on Just TWO Accounts!

This one blew my mind! Everything we think we know about the first Thanksgiving comes from only two brief mentions in writings by Pilgrims Edward Winslow and William Bradford. That's it! Even more surprising: neither of these original sources actually used the word "Thanksgiving." Most of what we celebrate today was actually created by later storytellers and mythmakers who filled in the gaps with their own imagination.

It makes you realize how precious those family memories and traditions we're creating in our Hampton Roads homes truly are. Every Thanksgiving dinner, every family story shared around the table: these moments become the foundation of our own family histories!

Did You Know? Turkey Probably Wasn't on the Menu!

I know, I know: this one shocked me too! The centerpiece of our modern Thanksgiving feast may never have graced that famous 1621 table. The Pilgrims prepared various birds that could have included turkey, duck, or goose, while the Wampanoag tribe brought venison and likely seafood like eels, clams, mussels, and lobster.

Imagine serving lobster at your Thanksgiving dinner here in Virginia Beach! Actually, that sounds pretty amazing: we do have some incredible seafood options right here in Hampton Roads.

Did You Know? Virginia Actually Had the "First" Thanksgiving!

Here's one that'll make us Virginians proud! While everyone talks about Plymouth Rock in 1621, the Berkeley Hundred settlement right here in Virginia held a thanksgiving celebration TWO YEARS EARLIER in 1619! They declared that day should be "perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God."

As a Bible-believing Christian who loves Jesus, this touches my heart deeply. These early settlers understood the importance of acknowledging God's blessings and provisions, just as we do today. It's beautiful to know that right here in our state, families were gathering to give thanks to the Lord centuries ago.

But wait: it gets even more interesting! The very first Thanksgiving might have been Spanish, held on September 8, 1565, in what's now St. Augustine, Florida. Spanish settlers and local people shared a meal to mark their safe arrival, holding a religious ceremony to thank God for their journey's end.

Did You Know? A Town Postponed Thanksgiving for Pumpkin Pie!

This story is absolutely delightful! In 1705, the town of Colchester, Connecticut actually postponed their entire Thanksgiving celebration because they couldn't get molasses to make pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie had become such an important symbol of New World bounty that they refused to celebrate without it!

I love this story because it shows how food traditions become so meaningful to families. Just like how many of you probably have that one special dish that absolutely MUST be on your Thanksgiving table, or your family won't consider it complete!

Did You Know? Thanksgiving Became National During Our Darkest Hour!

Thanksgiving didn't become an official federal holiday until 1863: right in the middle of the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation during one of America's most divided periods, largely due to years of advocacy by magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale.

Lincoln saw the holiday as a way to help heal our broken nation. Even in the darkest times, he recognized the power of coming together in gratitude. What a beautiful reminder that no matter what challenges we're facing: whether it's finding the right home, navigating a tough market, or dealing with life's unexpected turns: there's always something to be thankful for.

As Philippians 4:6 reminds us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Even President Lincoln understood the healing power of gratitude during difficult times.

Did You Know? America Had TWO Thanksgivings for Three Years!

This is wild! In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving up a week because retailers warned him that a late November date would hurt Christmas shopping and economic recovery from the Great Depression. But here's the crazy part: sixteen states refused to go along with the change!

For three whole years (1939-1941), America celebrated two different Thanksgivings until Congress finally passed a law in 1941 establishing the fourth Thursday of November as the official date. Can you imagine the confusion? Some families probably celebrated twice!

Did You Know? The First Celebration Lasted Three Whole Days!

Forget your afternoon dinner: the original Thanksgiving in 1621 was a three-day festival! It brought together at least 90 Wampanoag people and 52 English settlers at Plymouth, Massachusetts. Chief Massasoit was among the honored guests.

Three days of feasting, fellowship, and gratitude! Now that sounds like a celebration worthy of God's abundant blessings. It makes our modern dinner seem pretty quick by comparison, doesn't it?
